“When his plane would crash, women would empty the grandstands and try to rip his clothes off,” Guinnane told a crowd of about 200 people. Wiseman ultimately got out of flying because “his friends were dying” in air crashes.

The flight is well-documented in a recent issue of the Windsor Historical Society’s newsletter, Windows Walk.

Pacific Coast Air Museum Wiseman Centennial Celebration

Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM) hosts a Centennial Celebration
Saturday, February 19, 2011 from 12:00 to 3:00pm.
Schulz Sonoma County Airport’s Redwood Hangar.

Noon:  Doors open, enter thru the lobby of Sonoma Jet Center

All Day: Classic Cars, Local Museum Exhibits, Silent Auction, Food and Beverages, Music

12:45 pm:  Re-enactment of first air mail flight from Petaluma to Santa Rosa arrives (weather dependent)
1:00 pm: Color Guard and National Anthem
1:15 pm:  Historian Gaye LeBaron, Dignitaries,  Proclamations
1:45 pm: “Happy Anniversary” with cake
2:00 pm:  Silent Auction, Table #1 closes
2:30 pm:  Slient Auction, Table #2 closes.  Bar closes.  Exhibits available until 3pm.
3:00 pm:  Event concludes

Walk the first ever Airmail Flight:

100th Anniversary of Fred Wiseman’s Historic Flight
February 17-18, 1911

Retrace the path of the first airmail flight from Petaluma to Santa Rosa. $20 fee includes T-shirt, healthy brunch, bus ride and a heck of a lot of fun!

Highlights of the walk include visits to: Denman Creamery, Penngrove Power and Implement Museum, Railroad Speeders, Cotati Historical Society, Windsor Historical Society, Pacific Coast Air Museum, Sonoma County Museum, Petaluma Airport and Petaluma Historical Library and Museum.

Participants may forgo all or part of the walk—non walkers can meet us at the end of the walk at around 1:00 pm at 3367 Petaluma Hill Road to jump on the bus to visit the museums. $20 fee applies to walkers and non-walkers and must be paid in advance.

  • Meet in the parking lot next to the Petaluma Library
  • 100 Fairgrounds Drive
  • Walk begins at 6:30 am
  • Event ends around 7:10 pm at the Petaluma Library
